It was a very busy start to the term with lockdown, masks on masks off. Thank you to all of you for working with us whilst the restrictions were in place. It was with a heavy heart that I had to cancel the Mother’s Day morning tea. As I said in my note, when I cancelled it we are keeping all our fingers crossed that we will be able to go ahead with the Father’s day Brekkie and will turn it into a family celebration brekkie. I am also working with Louise Burke, the Principal of the Primary School, to organise a combined family Day and International Day of Disability. As soon as we have details I will send it out to you.
We had a lovely Early Year assembly a few Fridays ago. It always surprises me how quickly our new students start to grow up. There are some photos later in the newsletter.
We are now well in to the time of year where colds and bugs raise their heads. Due to the current COVID climate, please do not send your child into school if they are not well or get upset if we call to say that your child is unwell and needs to go home. We have already had a lot of sickness amongst the staff so it is very important that we keep everyone at school as healthy as possible and that means staying at home if unwell.
We have had a few dress up days since our last newsletter ‘Dress like a pirate day which is one of my favourite dress up days of the year. Also PJ day last Friday I was very envious of all the students and staff who were able to wear their PJ – I had to go to a meeting in central office and didn’t think it was a good idea to wear my PJs!
The Early Year’s classes, Pink, Gold and Green, had an incursion from WADSA (Western Australian Disability Sporting Association) on Friday of week 5 and 6. They got to experience a range of sporting activities designed to get them involved. We have had them here before and it’s been a great success.
Last Monday we had an incident which could have been 100% worse. One of the mainstream students ran behind one of our staff cars whilst they were manoeuvring. Fortunately, they were unharmed but it could easily have not been the case. Please DO NOT enter the school through the carpark entrances – these are on both Hendra Street and Fisher Street. Please come into school via any of the pedestrian gates.
We have also seen an increase in the number of cars parked in the two ACROD spaces outside of Pink Room, I do understand that parking at drop off and pick up is very hard. But please can I ask if you do not have an ACROD sticker that you do not park in these spaces.
Finally, from me as we approach the end of Term 2, I am starting to have to look at the staffing for Term 3. This is partly due to the fact that some of our Education Assistant are at University and the University change their timetables every semester, but also due to Gemma Derby leaving us to go on Maternity leave. I have been very fortunate enough to have secured a new Education Support teacher for Silver Room, her name is Karen Appleby. She has already been in a couple of time and has meet the students in Silver Room. She will be starting in week 9 of this term.

We love Just Dance in Silver Room, and one of our FAVOURITE songs to dance to is Mario Kart. We love it so much we decided to perform it at assembly. We had so much fun creating our Mario Kart costumes and performing on stage. We all got to choose our favourite character, there was even a glitch - and Gordon from Thomas the Tank Engine snuck in the dance!!
It was great to link our Mario Kart dance to our Narrative Writing lessons, where each child wrote their own version of what was happening during the race. This helped us to practice the structure of a Narrative, which has been our focus during writing this term.
OOH! – Interesting characters
AAH! – Descriptive setting
UH OH! - Exciting problem
PHEW! - Fix the problem
We have so many talented authors and illustrators in Silver Class!
Term 2 has been a busy term for the Green Room. We have welcomed a new student and a few new team members into our classroom (Ms Murray and Mrs Townsend). Everyone has been working extremely hard in our classroom. Below are a few things we have done this term.
In Technologies we have worked on being respectful with our iPads and are learning about directions and coding. The green room have been exploring with the BeeBots by programming in directions from our coding cards and we have also explored how to get the BeeBot from one place on the mat to another.
In Science we have been working on living things and their needs and wants and the parts of a plant. We have been exploring this through songs, sorting, cut and paste and labelling activities.
On Friday the 28th of May Cloverdale enjoyed PJ Day. Everyone in the Green Room was extremely cosy and comfortable it was a fantastic day!
Finally, this Friday the 4th of June the Green Room will be performing their assembly piece “Milkshake”. Wish these superstars luck!
This term in Blue Room has been so busy already! With Mother’s Day , we were able to do so many activities to make Mum feel special. Mrs Harris brought in pots and flowers that we got to paint and give our Mum’s on Mother’s Day morning! These were so beautiful and everyone wrote very kind messages to their Mum’s too.
Blue room received Clover Bear at last week’s assembly who has been so popular in class! He’s been a really good reading buddy so far and we can’t wait to see what adventures we can have with him.
In Science we have been looking at living and non-living things. We have been learning about the external features of living things and what they need to survive. It has been a really interesting topic to cover… especially when we get to see little caterpillars of all colours out in the playground!
We are all settled into our class now and are into a great routine. We all look forward to another great term ahead!
In Purple room, we are all having lots of fun learning and working together. Here are some of our favourite things:
- The best thing about school is reading my book in silent reading. – Zenel
- The best thing is playing with the stick insects and letting them climb all over me. – Codie
- Having so much fun at art – Collecting wood and painting dots and “woot woots” – Xander
- The best thing at school is having something to eat. – Reece
- I like to dance and play. – Elena
- The best thing I like about school is I like reading the books and Miss Tan. – Max
- The best thing about school is when I get to choose anything I want for free time. – Montana
- The best thing at school is playing at the playground and having fun. – Sofia
This week, we were given to the challenge to build an animal using connector straws. Some of the creations include a stick insect, a narwal and an octopus.
Hello Cloverdale! Dan Luxton here. Vicki Shelton has retired and was pleased to pass the SCIENCE and GREEN TEAM reins to me for the immediate term – we talk often! Ms Gloggner is enabling the GREEN TEAM leadership transition. And there are new teachers keen to join… WATCH THIS SPACE!
The Containers for Change poster says it all. Your students benefit from the money the P&C raise so we’d love you to drop your containers into the large, red-topped green bin in the Hendra Street Car Park. Although the photo doesn’t show it, the bin is now clearly labelled with the Containers for Change logo. The tub of containers I’m holding is worth about $8 to the P&C - it is such an easy way to contribute to the success of the school!
Look on the container’s label for the 10c insignia, put the container in a shopping bag (put the lid in another bag), and when the container bag is full, bring it down to the school when you drop off your kids (we hope soon to make dropping off your containers even easier by putting a small Containers for Change bin right outside the staff room). How convenient is that!
Batteries can be recycled at the front desk, in the library, or placed in the bin outside the Science Room. Collect bags of plastic lids, and zip-lock bags of ring-pulls from cans, and bread-bag tags; your kids know where to drop them off for recycling. Hey, in February, the EMRC declared Cloverdale one of the MOST IMPROVED schools for battery recycling over the last twelve months! Well done, Cloverdale!
Please continue to recycle containers without the 10c insignia through your domestic recycle bin. Until next time, Dan.
